“Caution: College May Not Be For Everyone”

New White Paper Questions the Conventional Wisdom of Going to College

Express Employment Professionals Says It’s Time
to Stop Overlooking Career Technical Education

Well-Paying In-Demand Jobs Await CTE Students

OKLAHOMA CITY, April 2, 2014 — Express Employment Professionals, the nation’s largest privately held staffing firm, today released a new white paper exploring the benefits of Career Technical Education (CTE) and challenging the conventional wisdom that a four-year college is the best post-secondary education option in today’s economy.

Entitled “Caution: College May Not Be For Everyone,” this white paper takes an in-depth look at CTE, formerly known as vocational education, and its comparative benefits over a traditional bachelor’s degree. Express believes CTE does not get the attention it deserves in America, and parents, students, and guidance counselors are often unaware of four basic facts:

  1. CTE-trained workers are in demand.
  2. CTE can lead to high-paying jobs.
  3. CTE is affordable.
  4. CTE keeps America competitive.

The white paper explores each of these topics, offering real-world examples, eye-opening statistics, and recommendations for parents and students, schools and policymakers.

“A stable career doesn’t always require a four-year degree. Career Technical Education can deliver what so many Americans want – a promising career at an affordable price,” said Bob Funk, CEO of Express, and a former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. “I see who’s getting hired in the modern economy, and it’s clear career tech can lead to not only a job, but also a successful career. It baffles me that more people aren’t seizing the opportunity.

“America has to wake up: as a country we are falling behind the rest of the world in CTE. That has serious implications for our economic health and competitiveness. This is a conversation we must have, and it can’t wait any longer.”
