Adjusting to the Swing Shift There can be something nice about working the swing shift. The world is quieter at night, and sometimes you're even paid a little extra for taking those hours.

If you've agreed to accept swing-shift hours, first it's important to be aware that it's not a "shift." It's a lifestyle. Those who work the swing shift usually sleep when the sun's out and wake up just in time to have dinner with the family before heading to work. Depending on the hours you're assigned, you may even be able to see your family off to bed before heading out.

The hardest part of working swing shift is making the adjustment, though. Before you work your first night shift, here are a few things you can do to start making the adjustment.

    Gradually Adjust Your Sleep Schedule

Sleeping at night will no longer be a luxury when you start your new shift. If possible, start gradually moving your sleep hours toward where they'll be once your shift starts. Instead of going to bed at eleven p.m., stay up until three or four a.m. Then push it to five and six. Work your way toward your new sleep hours and stay there.

    Consider Light Therapy

One unavoidable side effect of night work is that you don't get the hours of daylight you need. If possible, try to let at least a little sunshine into your day. Go for a walk either before going to bed in the morning or immediately upon waking up. You could also invest in a light therapy box that will help keep your mind healthy.

    Stick to Your Schedule

It won't be easy but do your best to stay with your sleep schedule all the time. On days off and holidays, try to sleep when you usually do. This may not be doable all the time. For instance, if you take a family vacation, your fellow travelers will probably want you to be up when they are. But the more you shift your sleep hours, the harder it will be to get back on track on your next workday.

If you find it tough to adjust to your new schedule, don't be afraid to ask for help. Your doctor can advise you on any issues you're having making the switch.
