New Year's Resolution Tips for Finding A New Job
December 30, 2019
Whether you're between jobs or not, as one year turns into another, it's natural to set a resolution to start a new phase in your career. One of the best things you can do for your professional future is to take some time to fully assess what you want out of your next job, then launch your search strategically. Here are some tips to help you set your New Year's resolutions for finding a new job.
Create Specific Goals
There's an art to setting goals that get results. A goal like, "Find a new job" won't help you as much as, "Send out ten resumes a week." Your goals should be
measurable and achievable
, giving you the push you need to keep going day after day.
Break Them into Action Items
A monthly or weekly goal can seem overwhelming, so it can help if you break your resolution into smaller bites. If you want to make new connections on LinkedIn, for instance, add to your daily to-do list an item that has you reaching out to at least a few every day.
Do a Resume Overhaul
When was the last time you updated your resume? The first step in any job search should be to update it to ensure it addresses the type of job you want. Eliminate older positions, especially if they're no longer relevant, and make sure the font and design are professional and
visually appealing
.
Never Give Up
There will be obstacles along the way. You can count on it. If you determine from the start that you won't give up, those obstacles will be easier to take. Look at your daily goals and stick with them, even if rejections are pouring in. Decide that every "no" puts you one step closer to a "yes."
Track Your Results
Since the goals you set were measurable, you already have the tools necessary to track your results. At the end of each week or month, look back at everything you've accomplished and take pride in it. Also
evaluate the responses
you're getting and determine where you can tweak your approach to get yourself closer to the job of your dreams.
With the right goals, there's no limit to the goals you can achieve this year. This is also a great time to decide where you want to be next year at this time and make sure you're on the right track to get to the next phase in your career. With a little hard work and some introspection, you can craft a great resume and get the job you've always wanted.
