Canceling a Job Interview the Responsible Way
Lakewood, CO - July 28, 2023
You finally landed that job interview you’ve been waiting
for. Congratulations! However, something came up and now you can’t make it
anymore. It could be you decide to go with a different opportunity. Whatever
the case, it’s important to be responsible and respectful to the interviewer
who scheduled it. Cancelling an interview can be a nerve-wracking task, but
there are ways to do it and still leave a good impression. In this blog post, a
top-tier career center will give you some tips for canceling a job interview
the right way.
1. Give at
least 24 hours’ notice
It’s never a good look to cancel an interview at the last
minute. This will leave the recruiter with an empty slot that could have been
filled with another prospect. By giving at least 24 hours' notice, you will be
much more courteous. You can either send an email to the person who scheduled
the interview or give them a call to notify them that you won’t be attending.
Be sure to apologize for having to cancel and for any inconvenience it may have
caused.
2. Be honest
If you’re having to cancel the interview due to something
out of your control, like an unexpected illness, family emergency, or even
another job offer, be honest about it. Just be careful not to go into too much
unnecessary detail about the reason. It’s best to just say “I’m unable to
make the scheduled interview” with a brief explanation. Being honest will
be appreciated by showing respect for their time.
3. Avoid
ghosting
Although you might want to simply ignore the interviewer and
seemingly go off the grid, it’s best to be professional and let them know. Even
if you’ve decided to not pursue the job at all, you should still reach out. You
never know what opportunities could arise in the future, so treating the
interviewer and company with respect is in your best interest.
Example for
canceling an interview:
Dear Interviewer,
Thank you for the opportunity to be considered for this
role. Unfortunately, I have decided to pursue a different path and will no
longer be attending the interview. I apologize for any inconvenience this may
have caused.
I appreciate your time and thank you again.
Best regards,
