More than 3.8 Million Jobs in U.S. Aren’t Filled Due to Lack of Qualified Workers

Despite 7.6% Unemployment, Jobs are Still Looking for People

New Study Reveals Welders, Machinists, and Administrative Positions Among Top Jobs Available
Nashville, Indianapolis and Dallas Among the Top 10 Cities with the Most Jobs Unfilled

OKLAHOMA CITY, July 10, 2013 — In the first of an upcoming series of reports entitled America Employed, Express Employment Professionals, the nation’s largest privately-held staffing firm, today released a study showing that throughout the country, despite the current unemployment rate of 7.6%, many jobs are unfilled due to a lack of qualified workers.

Most of these jobs pay above minimum wage with a range of $11 to $30 per hour in the fields of manufacturing, accounting, medical services, administrative, sales, engineering and information technology.

“Despite the high unemployment rate, there are still good, high–paying jobs that remain unfilled due to the lack of available people with the right skills,” said Bob Funk, CEO of Express Employment Professionals, and a former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. “In this economy, you would think there would be very few jobs looking for people. Surprisingly, the number of businesses still needing workers is very high. In some markets, qualified candidates with the right skills are able to upgrade to a better position or find a new job in just a few days.” The positions most in demand, Funk added, are skilled commercial positions like engineers, CNC machinists/programmers, welders and drivers.

Express currently has immediate openings for more than 16,500 jobs. The following are the top 10 cities in which jobs are looking for people:

  1. Nashville, Tenn. (559)
  2. Napa Valley, Calif. (235)
  3. Dallas (222)
  4. Eau Claire, Wis. (220)
  5. Oklahoma City (197)
  6. Portland, Ore. (175)
  7. Austin, Texas (168)
  8. Indianapolis, Ind. (162)
  9. Tacoma, Wash. (153)
  10. Terre Haute, Ind. (143)

The top-ten hardest jobs to fill due to the lack of qualified workers are:

  1. CNC Programmer (Manufacturing Engineer)
  2. Welders
  3. Machinists
  4. Accounting (Accountant, Auditor, Accounts Receivable/Payable)
  5. Sales
  6. Commercial Licensed Truck Drivers
  7. Information Technology (Technician, Web Design, Programmer)
  8. Engineers
  9. Medical Professionals
  10. Administrative (Office Manager, Administrative Assistants, Bookkeeper/Payroll Specialist, Legal Assistant, Data Entry, Customer Service Rep.)
