Maintenance Technician – Job Description
Summary:
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining production and facility equipment, including engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and other mechanical devices. This role involves frequent off-site travel to vendor locations to facilitate repairs, procure supplies, and ensure operational efficiency. A valid California driver’s license is required due to time-sensitive business needs. In the absence of the department supervisor, the lead technician will assist in supervising the maintenance team. Work hours may vary depending on company unlocking responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose mechanical issues by observing equipment in operation and listening for irregular sounds.
- Dismantle machinery to access and replace defective components.
- Inspect parts for wear, imperfections, and dimensional accuracy.
- Adjust and calibrate mechanical and control systems.
- Repair or replace faulty components and install specialized parts.
- Clean and lubricate equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Operate tools such as lathes, drill presses, and grinders to fabricate or repair parts.
- Initiate purchase orders for parts and equipment.
- Perform electrical repairs, including DC drive systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair braiding machines.
- Conduct emergency repairs and scheduled maintenance during production downtime.
- Utilize mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic skills to maintain equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance and maintain facility infrastructure.
- Use hand tools, power tools, electric meters, and material handling equipment.
- Identify and report defective materials or unusual conditions.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and work orders.
- Travel to vendor sites to expedite repairs and coordinate services.
- Train and mentor maintenance staff in safety and best practices.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety standards.
- Maintain clean and organized workspaces.
- Keep accurate maintenance records and documentation.
- Read technical drawings and use precision measuring instruments.
- Maintain regular attendance and flexibility in work hours.
- Collaborate effectively with team members.
Supervisory Duties:
In the supervisor’s absence, the lead technician will oversee the maintenance staff, ensuring compliance with company policies and applicable laws.
Qualifications:
- Certificate from a college or technical school (1 year), or 3–5 years of experience in industrial or manufacturing maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and technical manuals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Proficiency in basic and advanced math, including geometry and statistical concepts.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Valid California Driver’s License required.
- Welding certification preferred.
- Ability to operate gas and electric welders.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent walking, sitting, climbing, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
- Regular lifting of up to 15 lbs; frequent lifting of up to 25 lbs; occasional lifting of 50+ lbs with assistance.
- Visual acuity including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Work Environment:
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, wet/humid conditions, heights, fumes, outdoor weather, heat (during welding), electrical hazards, and vibration.
- Noise levels range from moderate to loud; hearing protection is not required per company survey.
Safety & Training:
- Must follow all company safety policies and procedures as outlined in the health and safety manual.
- Training includes on-the-job, regulatory, safety, quality, and company standards, with documentation maintained for all employees.
- Department-specific training will be conducted by the supervisor.
