Job Summary
A growing road construction company is seeking an experienced Estimator to prepare accurate cost estimates for roadway, paving, grading, and infrastructure projects. The Estimator will analyze plans, specifications, and project requirements to develop competitive bids while ensuring profitability and project feasibility.
This role works closely with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to ensure estimates reflect realistic costs, timelines, and resource requirements.
Key Responsibilities

Review project plans, specifications, and bid documents for roadway and civil construction projects

Prepare detailed cost estimates including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs

Perform quantity takeoffs for grading, paving, drainage, utilities, and related road construction activities

Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier bids

Develop and submit competitive project bids and proposals

Maintain cost databases and historical records for estimating accuracy

Identify potential risks, cost-saving opportunities, and project challenges during the bidding phase

Collaborate with project managers and operations teams to ensure smooth transition from bid to project execution

Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits when required

Track bid results and assist with post-bid analysis
Qualifications

3+ years of estimating experience in road construction, paving, grading, or civil construction

Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical specifications

Experience with quantity takeoffs and bid preparation

Proficiency with estimating software, Excel, and construction management systems

Strong mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills

Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously

Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications

Experience estimating DOT, municipal, or public works projects

Familiarity with Caltrans specifications and standards

Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (preferred but not required)
