Job Full Description

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Medical / Ophthalmic Scribe to support our ophthalmologists during patient examinations and procedures. The Ophthalmic Scribe plays a critical role in documenting clinical encounters in real-time, allowing physicians to focus on patient care. This position requires strong knowledge of ophthalmic terminology, excellent typing skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately and efficiently document patient history, exam findings, physician assessments, and treatment plans during live patient encounters
  • Enter data into Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems in compliance with practice standards
  • Assist with preparing exam rooms and ensuring that necessary equipment and supplies are available
  • Transcribe verbal instructions from the ophthalmologist regarding diagnoses, prescriptions, and follow-up care
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations
  • Coordinate with clinical staff to ensure smooth patient flow and timely documentation
  • Review and edit medical records for completeness and accuracy
  • Support physicians with administrative tasks such as referral letters, coding, and chart preparation

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or medical assistant training preferred
  • 1+ years of experience in a medical or ophthalmic setting
  • Strong understanding of ophthalmic terminology, anatomy, and procedures
  • Proficiency in EHR systems and fast, accurate typing skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask and remain focused in a busy clinical environment
  • Commitment to patient privacy and professional ethics

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
  • Experience working directly with ophthalmologists or optometrists
  • Familiarity with common eye conditions and treatments (e.g., glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or other languages) is a plus
