Assistant Controller

 

Job Summary:

 

The Assistant Controller plays a critical leadership role within the Finance & Accounting team and acts as a key liaison between Accounting and Operations. Reporting directly to the Controller, this individual is responsible for overseeing daily accounting operations, reviewing financial statements, managing staff, supporting audits and budget development, and ensuring operational efficiency across systems. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, analytical, and highly communicative finance professional with a passion for continuous learning and improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

 

Financial Review & Reporting

  • Conduct first-level reviews of financial statements and reports to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timeliness.
  • Support the Controller in month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Analyze and communicate financial results to internal stakeholders, identifying trends and areas of concern.

Operational Liaison & Cross-Functional Support

  • Serve as the primary liaison between Accounting and Operations (VP, Regional Directors), helping to ensure alignment on financial procedures, policies, and reporting.
  • Provide operational support and financial insight to aid strategic decision-making.

Staff Management & Leadership

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate and oversee staff involvement in tax audits, insurance audits, and third-party financial reviews for partners.

 

 

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Contribute to the development of annual budgets and global cash flow forecasts in collaboration with leadership.
  • Monitor budget vs. actuals, providing variance analysis and recommendations for improvement.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in maintaining and configuring the accounting side of the organization’s ERP system and financial tenant structure.
  • Participate in ongoing training and classes to enhance system knowledge and optimization capabilities.
  • Support the integration and mapping of new PMS (Property Management Systems) and POS (Point of Sale) systems to accounting platforms.

Payment Processing & Reconciliation

  • Manage and maintain accounting records related to credit card merchant platforms.
  • Ensure the accuracy and reconciliation of credit card transactions and fees.

Inventory & Cost Analysis

  • Assist in reviewing inventory processes for food, beverage, and retail operations.
  • Identify cost anomalies, policy weaknesses, and areas for procedural improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in a supervisory or assistant controller capacity.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience with PMS/POS system integration and accounting configuration is highly desirable.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with leadership.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Primarily office-based with potential hybrid flexibility depending on business needs.
  • Occasional travel to operational sites may be required.
  • Must be able to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
