Job Title: Cost Accountant
Position Summary
The Cost Accountant works closely with Purchasing, Operations, and Engineering teams to maintain and update standard cost and inventory systems. This position involves analyzing financial data to control costs, improve efficiency, and maximize profitability by tracking manufacturing costs, developing budgets, and preparing reports for management. Key responsibilities include conducting variance analysis, managing inventory, recommending cost-saving measures, and collaborating across departments to support informed business decisions.
The ideal candidate possesses excellent organizational and analytical skills, strong conceptual and problem-solving abilities, and thrives in a fast-paced environment while meeting tight deadlines. Proficiency in IT and accounting systems is essential. The salary range is $85,000-$95,000!
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Cost Tracking & Analysis: Analyze and track manufacturing costs, including materials, labor, overhead, and subcontract costs to ensure financial accuracy and identify improvement opportunities.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Collaborate with management and other departments to develop and maintain budgets, forecasts, and long-term business plans.
- Reporting: Prepare timely and accurate financial reports highlighting cost trends, metrics, and variances.
- Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to make products and processes more efficient and cost-effective.
- Inventory Management: Manage inventory counts, track costs of goods sold, and ensure proper valuation.
- Compliance: Ensure cost-related activities and financial reporting comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and industry regulations. Maintain and update standard cost systems by reviewing BOM integrity, updating standards for purchased parts, manufactured parts, time, labor, overhead, and outside processes. Identify and recommend areas for improvement.
Education, Experience & Skills
- Analytical Skills: Strong ability to analyze, interpret, and compare financial data to identify trends and provide strategic recommendations.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in accounting software, ERP systems, MRP systems, and Microsoft Excel.
- Communication & Teamwork: Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and collaborate effectively with various departments and levels of management.
- Finance Functions: Perform weekly and month-end closings, including reconciliation of inventory and other accounts. Identify and resolve reporting issues, and complete other month-end close responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
- Other: Cross-trained and able to perform additional accounting functions as needed.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting required; CMA certification preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years of general and cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge: Proficient understanding of standard accounting principles and procedures.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer Skills: Strong computer proficiency, particularly in Microsoft Office applications.
