Fish Marking (SWING)
Pay: $19.00/hour
Duration: July 7 – July 31
Shift: 2pm - 10pm
Position Summary
The Fish Marking Technician is responsible for assisting with fish marking operations and data collection activities in support of fisheries research and management programs. This position requires attention to detail, accuracy in record keeping, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Fish Marking
- Perform fish marking procedures according to established protocols and guidelines.
- Apply tags, labels, or marks using various techniques such as fin clipping, injection, branding, or other approved non-invasive methods.
- Ensure fish are handled safely and humanely throughout the marking process.
Identification & Data Recording
- Accurately identify fish species and record pertinent information including species, size, weight, sex, location, and other required data.
- Maintain detailed, organized, and accurate records for future reference and data analysis.
- Verify data accuracy and assist with data entry as needed.
Equipment Maintenance
- Maintain, clean, and calibrate fish marking equipment including tagging devices, labeling systems, fin clippers, and other tools.
- Report equipment issues, malfunctions, or maintenance needs to supervisors.
- Assist with troubleshooting and minor equipment repairs when appropriate.
Compliance & Safety
- Follow all applicable regulations, permits, and ethical guidelines governing fish marking activities.
- Adhere to animal welfare standards and established safety procedures.
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment for all team members.
Team Collaboration
- Work closely with fisheries biologists, technicians, and researchers to support fieldwork and research objectives.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to project success through effective communication and cooperation.
- Assist with additional project-related duties as assigned.
