Job Full Description
We are seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to work in a busy environment. This position will primarily operate a mobile shearer to process and cut large pieces of scrap metal into manageable sizes for sorting, processing, and recycling.
Responsibilities:
- Safely and efficiently operate a hydraulic scrap metal shearer.
- Process, cut, and size various types of scrap metal.
- Load, move, and position scrap materials for processing.
- Inspect materials and identify items that may require special handling.
- Perform daily equipment inspections and report any mechanical issues.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area around operating equipment.
- Follow all safety procedures and company guidelines.
- Assist with general scrap-yard operations as needed.
- Communicate with other yard employees to coordinate material movement and processing.
Qualifications
- Previous experience operating a scrap shearer, excavator, material handler, or other heavy equipment preferred.
- Ability to safely operate heavy machinery in an industrial environment.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to recognize basic equipment issues.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong attention to safety and awareness of surroundings.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Previous scrap-yard or metal recycling experience is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods.
- Ability to climb in and out of heavy equipment.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical labor as needed.
- Ability to work around loud machinery, dust, metal, and industrial equipment.
Work Environment
This is a fast-paced, industrial scrap-yard environment with heavy machinery, metal materials, noise, dust, and outdoor working conditions. Safety, equipment awareness, and proper operation of the shearer are critical to success in this position.
