Heavy Equipment Operator - $17.00/HOUR

A local company needs Heavy Equipment Operators. 

A Heavy Equipment Operator operates machinery like cranes, loaders, and forklifts to move, load, and position steel beams, coils, and other materials within the mill or production facility. Responsibilities include performing daily equipment inspections, communicating with other workers to coordinate lifting and placement, and maintaining a safe work environment by adhering to safety procedures and reporting any unsafe conditions. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Equipment Operation: Operate cranes, forklifts, loaders, and other heavy machinery to move, stack, and load various steel products and raw materials. 
  • Material Handling: Carefully load and unload steel coils, beams, sheets, and other materials, ensuring secure handling and placement. 
  • Equipment Inspection: Conduct pre-shift and routine inspections of equipment, including checking fluid levels and ensuring all components are in safe, working order. 
  • Safety and Maintenance: Adhere to strict safety protocols, report potentially hazardous situations, and perform minor maintenance and cleaning of equipment. 
  • Communication: Work closely with other team members, including crane operators, maintenance staff, and quality control personnel, to coordinate tasks and resolve issues. 
  • Quality Control: Monitor the quality of materials and finished products to ensure they meet specifications. 

Typical Work Environment

  • Steel Mill Setting: The job is performed within a steel mill or manufacturing plant environment. 
  • Shift Work: This role often involves working in shifts as part of a team. 
  • High-Temperature Conditions: Operators may work in high-temperature environments when handling molten steel or working near furnaces. 

Essential Skills

  • Precision: Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy are crucial for safely handling heavy and expensive materials. 
  • Coordination: Excellent hand-eye and hand-foot coordination is required to maneuver heavy machinery in confined spaces. 
  • Adaptability: The ability to adapt to changing work environments, manage competing demands, and respond to unexpected events is important. 
  • Physical Stamina: Operators need to be able to sit for long periods, stand and walk on uneven surfaces, and at times lift heavy objects.
