Estimator - $18.00/HOUR
A construction company in West El Paso needs an Estimator. The Estimator's job includes
preparing detailed cost estimates for construction projects by analyzing plans, calculating costs for materials and labor, and evaluating bids. Key responsibilities involve using software to simulate projects, communicating with management and clients, and performing quantity takeoffs. Estimators work in offices and may visit construction sites, with tasks becoming more intense during bid periods, requiring strong math and communication skills.
Core responsibilities
- Analyze project plans: Review blueprints, specifications, and other documents to understand the full scope of a project.
- Calculate costs: Determine the total cost of materials, labor, equipment, and other expenses for a project.
- Perform quantity takeoffs: Calculate the exact quantities of materials needed from project drawings.
- Evaluate bids: Solicit and evaluate bids from subcontractors and suppliers to ensure they are competitive and cover all necessary work.
- Use estimating software: Employ specialized software to create detailed cost breakdowns and simulate the construction process.
- Prepare bids and proposals: Compile all cost information into a comprehensive bid or quotation for clients.
- Monitor projects: Track project costs to ensure they stay within budget forecasts.
Skills and qualifications
- Education: A bachelor's degree in construction management or engineering is preferred, though an equivalent combination of experience and technical training can also be sufficient.
- Technical skills: Proficiency in construction estimating software, strong mathematical skills (algebra, geometry, arithmetic), and knowledge of building codes and construction methodologies are crucial.
- Soft skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, along with strong negotiation skills, are necessary for interacting with clients, management, and suppliers.
- Experience: Experience with a variety of construction projects and familiarity with different project types (e.g., commercial, residential).
