Job Full Description
The Kitchen Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the shelter kitchen and ensuring that nutritious, safe, and well-balanced meals are prepared and served to residents and staff. This position requires strong organizational and leadership skills, attention to food safety, and a compassionate approach when working with women and families experiencing difficult circumstances.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan weekly menus and coordinate the preparation and serving of daily meals.
- Prepare and/or supervise the preparation of nutritious meals while accommodating dietary restrictions, allergies, and special dietary needs.
- Manage food inventory and maintain adequate supplies for daily meal service.
- Order groceries, food products, and kitchen supplies while working within an established budget.
- Receive and properly store food deliveries and donations.
- Monitor food expiration dates and minimize food waste.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen, dining area, storage areas, and equipment.
- Follow all applicable health department, food safety, sanitation, and shelter policies.
- Supervise, train, and schedule kitchen staff and volunteers.
- Provide direction and oversight to residents or volunteers assisting with kitchen duties, when applicable.
- Maintain accurate records of food purchases, inventory, donations, and meals served.
- Monitor food costs and make recommendations for maintaining an efficient and cost-effective kitchen operation.
- Ensure kitchen equipment is used safely and report maintenance or repair needs promptly.
- Coordinate meal schedules and special dietary needs with shelter staff.
- Assist with holiday meals, special events, community meals, and other shelter activities.
- Create a welcoming, respectful, and supportive dining environment for residents.
- Maintain confidentiality and respect the privacy, dignity, and safety of all shelter residents.
- Perform other duties as assigned by shelter leadership.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in food service, kitchen management, restaurant management, or a related field preferred.
- Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and proper food-handling procedures.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, residents, and community partners.
- Compassionate, respectful, and nonjudgmental approach to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple responsibilities.
- Food handler certification or other applicable food-service certification preferred or required according to local regulations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry food, supplies, and kitchen equipment as needed.
- Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, and perform routine kitchen tasks.
- Ability to safely operate standard commercial kitchen equipment.
