Job Full Description
Job Summary: The Heat Treat Operator is responsible for performing heat treatment processes on metal parts to alter their physical and mechanical properties, ensuring that they meet the specifications required for various manufacturing applications. This includes the operation of furnaces, ovens, and other equipment used in the heat treatment of materials. The role requires a strong understanding of materials, temperatures, and processing techniques to ensure high-quality results while following all safety procedures and quality control guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate Heat Treatment Equipment: Manage and operate furnaces, ovens, quenching tanks, and other heat treatment machinery to heat and cool metal parts according to specified parameters (e.g., temperature, time, and atmosphere).
- Set Up Heat Treatment Procedures: Interpret technical drawings and work instructions to determine the correct heat treatment process (e.g., annealing, tempering, hardening, quenching, or stress relieving) for each batch of parts.
- Monitor Temperature and Time: Ensure that materials are heated to the required temperatures and maintained for the proper time to achieve the desired hardness, strength, or ductility.
- Quality Control: Inspect treated materials to ensure they meet the required hardness, finish, and other specifications. Perform hardness tests using Rockwell, Brinell, or other testing methods.
- Record Keeping: Document and maintain accurate records of heat treatment processes, temperatures, times, and results, ensuring traceability and compliance with quality control standards.
- Maintenance of Equipment: Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on heat treatment equipment, ensuring that it is functioning properly and safely. Report any issues to supervisors for more extensive repairs.
- Safety and Compliance: Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize risks associated with high temperatures, heavy equipment, and hazardous materials. Adhere to environmental and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA).
