Job Summary
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered trucks and related equipment used in commercial CDL operations. This role ensures all fleet vehicles meet Department of Transportation (DOT) safety standards and are kept in reliable, road-ready condition to support company operations.
Key Responsibilities
Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
- Perform routine maintenance on Class A and Class B CDL trucks (oil changes, filter replacements, brake adjustments, etc.)
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using diagnostic tools and manuals
- Repair or replace defective components including engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension systems, and fuel systems
- Conduct preventive maintenance services to minimize breakdowns and downtime
Inspections & Compliance
- Perform DOT inspections and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations
- Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections as needed
- Maintain accurate service, inspection, and repair records
- Ensure all trucks meet safety standards before returning to service
Troubleshooting & Diagnostics
- Use computer diagnostic equipment and software to identify issues
- Troubleshoot engine performance, emissions systems, and electronic control modules (ECMs)
- Test vehicles after repair to ensure proper operation
Shop & Equipment Management
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of shop and tools
- Properly use and care for diagnostic and repair equipment
- Order parts and maintain inventory as needed
Safety & Team Collaboration
- Follow all workplace safety protocols and OSHA guidelines
- Communicate effectively with drivers, dispatch, and management regarding vehicle status
- Respond to road calls or emergency breakdowns when required
