2021-12 Office Staffing Is it hard for you to tell your managers "no" when they want you to stay late again or add new tasks to your already overflowing to-do list? Are you not sure how to communicate to your coworkers that you don't want them to keep asking you to come in on your day off to cover their shift? If so, then a temp agency in Chandler, AZ is sharing this blog with 5 tips on how to be more assertive in the workplace!

    1) Be honest with yourself about your workload.

It's important that you be realistic about the amount of work that you can take on before it affects your performance and starts impacting your emotional well-being.

    2) Set boundaries with your managers and coworkers.

Setting boundaries is a healthy way to protect your time and energy. Tell your boss that you're not able to stay late anymore because of personal commitments, and if he or she needs something from you, ask for a specific time frame in which it's needed. If your coworker keeps asking you to cover his or her shift when you've already told them no, tell them directly that they need to approach management about alternative staffing if they need to be out of the office.

    3) Use "I" statements when communicating your needs.

Using "I" statements (e.g., I need, I want, etc.) helps to communicate your needs in a way that is direct and respectful. For example, instead of saying "I don't appreciate you always making me work late," say "I need to leave on time today because I have other commitments."

    4) Be assertive, not aggressive.

There's a big difference between being assertive and being aggressive. Assertiveness involves communicating your needs in a clear and respectful way, whereas aggression is often loud and forceful.

    5) Practice makes perfect.

The more you practice taking care of your needs, the easier it will become to do so without hesitation or fear. It's a process, but one that leads to better productivity at work and a healthy work-life balance.
