Assistant District Clerk & Accountant

Overview

The Assistant District Clerk & Accountant plays a key role in supporting effective municipal operations. This position works closely with the Controller and district staff to maintain accurate public records, ensure financial integrity, provide excellent customer service, and support the overall administrative functions of the District. The role requires strict compliance with all applicable laws and statutes, including reporting requirements to the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA).


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide front-line customer service by receiving the public, answering questions, and directing inquiries to the appropriate staff or department.

  • Receive and process customer payments.

  • Perform all aspects of utility billing, including meter reading data processing, monthly billing cycles, customer follow-up, service requests, and account research.

  • Create and process work orders for utility disconnections, reconnections, new service installations, inspections, and all Public Works service requests.

  • Monitor and maintain time-keeping software.

  • Track credit card purchases, maintain supporting receipts, and record transactions in the general ledger.

  • Maintain records by scanning, organizing, and uploading documents for individual lots within the District.

  • Update and maintain the District website, ensuring ADA compliance.

  • Perform additional administrative or accounting duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, public administration, business, or a related field required.

Experience:

  • Experience in municipal government, records management, or office administration preferred.


Essential Skills & Abilities

  • Strong accounting skills with excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness in record keeping and reporting.

  • Proficiency with office software, databases, and digital archiving systems.

  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with customers.

  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality with sensitive information.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively; self-directed with strong initiative.

  • Effective problem-solving abilities and adaptability in handling procedural or administrative changes.


 Wage: $30-$40/ hour DOE

 Location: Durango, CO. In person.
