 Certified Flagger

 

Key Responsibilities:
 
  • Certification: Must be certified and provide proof of certification
  • Establishing and maintaining safe work zones:
    This involves setting up and maintaining traffic control devices like cones, signs, and barricades. 
     
  • Directing traffic:
    Flaggers use hand signals, paddles, or wands to guide vehicles and pedestrians around the work zone. 
     
  • Communicating with the crew:
    They may use two-way radios or hand signals to communicate with other flaggers or supervisors about traffic conditions and potential hazards. 
     
  • Monitoring traffic flow:
    Flaggers observe traffic for any hazardous behavior and make adjustments to traffic control measures as needed. 
     
  • Inspecting and maintaining equipment:
    They ensure traffic control devices are visible, upright, and compliant with regulations. 
     
  • Responding to emergencies:
    Flaggers may need to modify traffic patterns or direct traffic away from accidents or other emergencies. 
     
  • Providing excellent customer service:
    They should be able to communicate effectively with the public, providing information about detours and potential delays. 
     
Qualifications:
  • Physical fitness: Flaggers need to be able to stand for extended periods 
     
  • Communication skills: Effective communication with the public and team members is essential. 
     
  • Attention to detail: Flaggers must be attentive to their surroundings and ensure all traffic control devices are in place and functioning correctly. 
     
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions: Flaggers are often required to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
