Job Full Description

EHS Specialist
Job Location: Sparks, MD

Our client, a chemical manufacturer in Sparks, MD, is looking for a hands-on Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist who is at their best on the production floor. If you’ve built and run safety programs in a manufacturing plant, can teach safety in a way operators respect, and like working side by side with Operations leaders to make real improvements, we want to talk to you.

WHAT YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE
As the site’s EHS Specialist, you will own the day-to-day safety programs across production, laboratory, warehouse and office areas. This is a visible, floor-based role. You’ll spend much of your time with operators, supervisors and maintenance staff: learning how the work is actually done, coaching safe behaviors, and partnering with Operations leadership on practical fixes. You will:

  • Implement, manage and continuously improve the site’s safety programs, policies and procedures in line with OSHA (29 CFR 1910), EPA and NFPA standards.
  • Run core manufacturing safety programs, including:
    • Machine guarding
    • Lockout/tagout (LOTO)
    • Powered industrial trucks (forklifts)
    • Ergonomics
    • Hazard communication
    • PPE
  • Lead hazard assessments and job safety analyses (JSAs), and work with Operations leaders to put practical controls in place.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits, then follow corrective actions through to completion with the responsible teams.
  • Lead incident and near-miss investigations, identify root causes, and drive corrective and preventive actions.
  • Coach employees and supervisors on the floor, building safe habits through respect, explanation and follow-up rather than enforcement alone.
  • Develop and deliver engaging safety training, including new-hire orientation, forklift and LOTO training, emergency response and ongoing compliance training.
  • Oversee chemical safety programs, including SDS management, labeling, storage and disposal.
  • Serve as the go-to resource for safety concerns on and off the production floor.
  • Track and report safety metrics, and use the trends to target improvements.
  • Manage emergency preparedness, including evacuation plans, drills and coordination with local emergency responders.
  • Support workers’ compensation processes, including incident documentation and return-to-work coordination.
  • Maintain accurate safety records and documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements.

WHAT WE SEEK

  • 3+ years of hands-on EHS experience implementing and managing safety programs in a manufacturing or chemical plant.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA general industry standards and applicable NFPA standards, especially for machine guarding, LOTO, powered industrial trucks, ergonomics and hazard communication.
  • A track record of incident investigations, root-cause analysis and corrective actions you have seen through to completion.
  • Experience conducting safety inspections and audits in a production environment.
  • A natural coach and trainer who can connect with operators, earn trust and change behavior on the floor.
  • A collaborative approach: you understand the workforce and its current state, and you work with Operations leaders rather than around them.
  • Ability to work independently as the site’s primary EHS resource.
  • Solid understanding of chemical safety principles and hazard analysis.
  • Ability to analyze data and trends to drive safety improvements.
  • Strong communication, organization and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety management systems.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, or a related field required.
  • Professional certifications (e.g., CSP, ASP, CIH) preferred. OSHA 30 General Industry and forklift trainer certification are a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to walk, stand and move throughout production and warehouse areas for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including respirators, safety glasses, gloves and protective clothing.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations as needed.

WHAT WE OFFER
An opportunity to make a visible impact on safety culture with a company that offers a competitive total rewards package, including:

  • 3 weeks of accrued paid vacation
  • 11 paid holidays
  • Full range of health benefits, including medical, dental and vision, plus short- and long-term disability
  • 401(k) matching (100% of the first 3% contributed, 50% of the next 2%)
  • Health and wellness programs and gym reimbursement
  • Educational assistance up to $7,000 per year
  • Company-sponsored fun events
  • Generous product discounts
