Position Title: In-Process Shift Lab Tech I

Department: Culture Development Lab
Shift: Permanent rotating 12-hour shifts (includes nights, weekends, holidays)
Reports To: Laboratory Supervisor


Education Requirements:

  • Required:
    • Associate degree in a scientific discipline (e.g., Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, or related field)
    • OR Associate/Bachelor’s degree in a non-scientific discipline with ≥3 college-level scientific courses

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum: 6 months of laboratory work experience
  • Preferred: ≥2 years of laboratory work experience with an Associate degree in a scientific discipline

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to perform microbiological, physical, and chemical testing
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office)
  • Ability to learn and use SAP and other lab software
  • Manual dexterity for pipetting and microscope work
  • Ability to distinguish color changes and visual cues for contamination detection

Preferred Qualifications & Other Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline
  • Physically capable of performing lab duties (lifting, stair climbing, etc.)
  • Strong organizational and discipline skills
  • Ability to work independently and maintain accurate documentation
  • Team-oriented with strong communication skills

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Sampling:

    • Independently collect samples from seed and fermentor vessels every 3 hours
    • Requires physical exertion (lifting 35 lbs, climbing stairs, manual sampling)
  2. Testing:

    • Perform microbiological and chemical tests
    • Use acids, bases, and other chemicals safely
    • Visual inspection under microscope
  3. Documentation:

    • Maintain accurate records in logbooks and databases
    • Enter data into computerized systems
  4. Glassware Cleanup:

    • Wash, sterilize, and store lab glassware
    • Transport using push carts
  5. Equipment Monitoring:

    • Read and record temperatures
    • Calibrate and replace equipment as needed
    • Cover vacant shifts and overtime

  • Apply critical thinking to troubleshoot lab errors
  • Understand and apply scientific theory behind tests
  • Communicate effectively with team and supervisors
  • Represent Quality during off-hour interactions with other departments
  • Ensure customer-focused results and timely reporting

Physical Demands:

  • Standing, walking, bending, squatting, climbing stairs/ladders (up to 12 hours)
  • Repetitive hand use (pipetting, documentation, equipment handling)
  • Lifting up to 21 lbs (flasks, glassware)
  • Exposure to noise, temperature extremes, chemicals, and biohazards
  • Use of PPE (safety eyewear, hearing protection)
