Job Summary:
The Powder Coat Technician is responsible for applying powder coating to metal parts and components to provide a durable and high-quality finish. This role involves preparing surfaces, operating powder coating equipment, and ensuring that the coated products meet quality standards and specifications.
Job Description:
- Surface Preparation:
- Prepare metal parts for powder coating by cleaning, degreasing, and sanding surfaces to ensure proper adhesion.
- Inspect parts for defects or contaminants and perform necessary pre-coating treatments.
- Powder Coating Application:
- Set up and operate powder coating equipment, including spray guns, and curing systems.
- Apply powder coating to metal parts using electrostatic spray techniques to achieve an even and consistent coat.
- Adjust equipment settings, such as voltage and airflow, to optimize coating quality and efficiency.
- Quality Control:
- Inspect coated parts for coverage, thickness, and finish quality to ensure they meet specifications and standards.
- Identify and address any issues such as uneven coating, defects, or color inconsistencies.
- Perform thickness measurements and adhesion tests as needed.
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of powder coating equipment and work areas to ensure proper functioning.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or issues to the supervisor and perform minor repairs as necessary.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Follow safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling powders, chemicals, and operating equipment.
- Adhere to environmental regulations and guidelines for handling and disposing of powder coating materials.
- Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of coating activities, including batch numbers, coating parameters, and quality control checks.
- Document any issues or deviations encountered during the coating process and report to the supervisor.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with other team members and departments to ensure timely production and meet quality standards.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding production status, issues, and any required adjustments.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for improving the powder coating process and overall efficiency.
- Stay informed about new techniques, technologies, and best practices related to powder coating.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or certification in coating, painting or related field is a plus.
- 1-3 years of experience in powder coating or similar finishing role is required.
- Proficiency in operating powder coating equipment and understanding of coating techniques.
- Ability to prepare surfaces properly and apply coatings evenly.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality finishes.
- Good problem solving skills and ability to troubleshoot coating issues.
- Basic mat skills for measuring coating thicknesses and mixing powders
Work Environment:
- Manufacturing or coating facility with exposure to powder coating equipment and materials.
- May involve standing for extended periods and working in a controlled environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move materials or coated items as needed up to 50 weight lbs.
- Capable of performing tasks that involve repetitive motions and manual dexterity.
