Senior Estimator – Commercial Construction

Position Overview

The Senior Estimator is responsible for developing accurate and comprehensive cost estimates for commercial construction projects. This role plays a critical part in the preconstruction process by analyzing drawings, specifications, and project documentation to determine material, labor, and overall project costs. The Senior Estimator collaborates closely with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, owners, and architects to ensure competitive, well-aligned bids that support project success, profitability, and quality execution.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review construction drawings, plans, and specifications to determine quantities and calculate accurate pricing across multiple trades and materials.

  • Attend pre-bid meetings and job site visits to evaluate existing conditions and gain a full understanding of project scope and requirements.

  • Solicit, receive, analyze, and level subcontractor and vendor bids to ensure completeness, scope coverage, and pricing accuracy.

  • Communicate directly with subcontractors and vendors to clarify scope, pricing, and exclusions prior to finalizing estimates.

  • Develop detailed project budgets throughout all phases of preconstruction, from schematic design through final construction documents.

  • Perform detailed quantity take-offs for self-performed work across a variety of commercial construction types.

  • Price work for most construction trades as required, ensuring all project components are accurately represented.

  • Prepare and price self-performed work for assigned trades, delivering complete and competitive estimates.

  • Develop and execute estimating strategies to pursue, price, and win competitive commercial construction bids.

  • Create conceptual estimates when full documentation is not available, utilizing experience, visualization, and industry knowledge.

  • Participate in value engineering and constructability reviews, preparing presentations and recommendations to improve cost efficiency and project outcomes.

  • Attend project kick-off meetings with estimators, project managers, and superintendents to ensure alignment on scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Participate in presentations with owners, architects, and internal stakeholders to review estimates and address cost-related questions.

  • Present estimates and estimate components to internal teams and external partners with clarity and accuracy.

  • Review project scopes and propose alternative methods or materials that may improve efficiency or increase profitability.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field (preferred).

  • 5+ years of experience estimating commercial construction projects.

  • Strong understanding of construction materials, methods, means, and industry standards.

  • Proficiency with construction estimating software.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
