Job Description
The temporary painter will primarily be responsible for coating fabricated steel components using industrial primers, including:
· Applying 77-Series Inhibitive Shopcoat Primer (e.g., 100D7714 – Dark Gray) and similar industrial primers or paints as assigned.
· Preparing steel surfaces per SSPC standards:
o SSPC-SP1: Solvent cleaning to remove oil, grease, and contaminants.
o SSPC-SP6: Commercial blast cleaning to remove mill scale and rust for better paint adhesion.
· Ensuring coating meets manufacturer's recommended film thickness:
o Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 2.0 – 4.0 mils
o Wet Film Thickness (WFT): 4.4 – 8.8 mils
· Using airless spray equipment with settings such as:
o Tip size: .015–.019
o Pressure: 1800–3000 psi
o Pump ratio: 30:1
· Performing “50% overlap spray technique”, which means each pass of the spray gun overlaps the previous pass by half, to ensure even coverage and avoid missed spots.
· Stripe-coating welds, edges, and complex geometry by brush prior to main spraying for extra protection.
· Maintaining a clean and organized work area and properly cleaning equipment using appropriate solvents such as mineral spirits (a petroleum-based cleaner used to dissolve oil-based paints).
