Job Summary
The CNC Engineer plays a critical role in developing, improving and sustaining high-precision machining operations. Using advanced CAM software, the CNC engineer develops and refines CNC programs, enhances tooling strategies, and ensures process reliability. This position is ideal for a master CNC Machinist with deep technical knowledge, a passion for continuous improvement, and strategic problem-solving abilities within an aerospace manufacturing environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list and additional tasks may be assigned. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Machining & Setup
- Set up, operate, and optimize CNC machine tools (multi-axis milling and turning).
- Perform CNC program proofing, validate first-article setups, and ensure reliable, efficient, and safe production.
- Evaluate and improve workholding, feeds/speeds, and toolpaths for performance and repeatability.
Tooling & Process Development
- Develop and maintain tooling standards; verify adherence across production processes.
- Design tooling sketches and test protocols for evaluating new machining techniques.
Automation & Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with Programming and Manufacturing Engineers to develop and optimize machining processes suitable for automation (robotic loading, in-process inspection & probing) to support lights-out manufacturing.
- Lead continuous improvement projects targeting quality, cost, and throughput optimization.
- Apply Lean Manufacturing principles (e.g., 5S, waste reduction, standard work) to machining processes to improve efficiency, reduce lead times, and eliminate non-value-added activities.
Root Cause & Process Analysis
- Use analysis tools (5-Why, Fishbone, FMEA) and trend data to conduct root cause analysis for machining failures and implement sustainable corrective actions.
Documentation & Standards
- Manage machining documentation, including setup sheets, tooling files, and manufacturing inspection plans.
Training & Leadership
- Train machinists and setup personnel; act as technical mentor and process expert.
Qualifications, Experience and Education Requirements
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)
- 5+ Years of experience in Precision CNC Machining (Multi-axis milling and/or turning)
- Technical Certificate or Associate’s degree in a related field (preferred)
Technical Knowledge & Experience
- Hands-on experience as a machinist for precision (Multi-axis) CNC manufacturing in aerospace, defense, or medical.
- Experience with CAM & CNC Simulation software (e.g., Mastercam, Vericut, Fusion 360).
- Deep understanding of G-code, canned cycles, and probing routines for automation.
- Demonstrated ability to machine tight-tolerance parts using aluminum, steel, and aerospace-grade alloys.
- Understanding metal behavior & mechanics in a machining environment (chip formation, vibration, distortion, heat transfer, etc.)
- Expertise in cutting tool geometry, fixture design, and tool life management.
Inspection & Quality
- Proficient with inspection tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges).
- Ability to interpret GD&T, blueprints, manufacturing drawings & 3D part models.
- Familiarity with inspection processes, run charts, and SPC data.
Problem Solving & Leadership
- Proven experience solving machining issues and driving root cause resolution with speed and confidence
- Experience leading or managing Continuous Improvement initiatives such as scrap reduction or cycle time improvements.
- Strong communication skills to interface across production, programming, and quality teams.
Software & Documentation
- Experience with standard MS Office tools (Excel, Outlook), ERP/MES and project tracking software.
- Proficient in documentation management and maintaining up-to-date process records.
