Job Title: Building & Grounds Custodian
Location: Detroit, MI
Job Type: Full-Time
Shift: 1st- Mon-Fri 8am-4:30pm

We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Building & Grounds Custodian to maintain the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of public housing properties. This role is essential in creating a clean, well-maintained, and welcoming environment for residents.

Key Responsibilities

Janitorial & Building Maintenance:

  • Clean and maintain common areas including hallways, stairwells, elevators, offices, restrooms, and entryways

  • Empty trash, remove debris, and ensure proper waste disposal daily

  • Vacuum carpets and mop floors; strip, clean, and wax surfaces as needed

  • Clean kitchens, appliances, and shared spaces

  • Conduct daily inspections to ensure cleanliness and proper lighting

  • Perform minor maintenance and report larger issues

Grounds Maintenance:

  • Remove litter and debris from property grounds daily

  • Maintain lawns through mowing, trimming, edging, and fertilizing

  • Plant and maintain flowers, shrubs, and landscaped areas

  • Water lawns and plants as needed

  • Inspect dumpsters and ensure cleanliness of trash areas

  • Perform seasonal duties such as leaf removal and snow/ice clearing

Additional Duties:

  • Conduct regular inspections of buildings and grounds

  • Assist with beautification and landscaping projects

  • Maintain and perform minor repairs on equipment

  • Follow safety guidelines and HUD/property management standards

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience (2+ years preferred)

Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment

  • Familiarity with grounds maintenance tools and machinery

  • Ability to operate equipment such as vacuum cleaners, buffers, lawn mowers, and snow removal tools

  • Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks independently or as part of a team

  • Basic maintenance and repair skills

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds regularly

  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform physical labor for extended periods

  • Comfortable operating maintenance and landscaping equipment

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
