Temporary/Seasonal Code Enforcement Officer

Location: Madras, Oregon
Pay Rate: $25 per hour
Schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (subject to change or additional days)

Job Overview

The City of Madras is hiring a Temporary/Seasonal Code Enforcement Officer to support community safety and compliance with city and fire district ordinances. This role involves field inspections, ordinance enforcement, and public interaction to address nuisance properties, abandoned vehicles, trash accumulation, camping violations, and more. Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate complaints related to code violations, hazards, and nuisance properties.
  • Conduct field inspections for issues such as abandoned vehicles, illegal parking, weed abatement, and trash accumulation.
  • Enforce city and fire district ordinances through education, citations, and legal processes.
  • Maintain accurate case files, documentation, and enforcement records.
  • Coordinate with city departments, fire districts, and legal counsel on enforcement actions.
  • Present cases to the County Code Enforcement Hearings Officer and testify in court as needed.
  • Operate a city-provided vehicle to perform field duties.
  • Support community education initiatives related to code compliance.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement on camping ordinance enforcement.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid and insurable driver’s license.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and record-keeping software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in sensitive situations.
  • Capable of walking long distances and lifting up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in public safety, municipal government, or code enforcement.
  • Familiarity with Oregon Revised Statutes and local ordinances.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.

Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws related to code enforcement.
  • Strong public relations and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to assess situations from multiple perspectives.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Comfortable working independently and in collaboration with other departments.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Use of standard office equipment including computers, phones, and copiers.
  • Fieldwork may involve walking on uneven terrain, construction sites, or unstable surfaces.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
