📍 Location: Bend, Oregon
💰 Pay: $25.75 per hour
🗓️ Schedule: Typically Four 10-Hour Shifts
Hours: 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Deschutes County Solid Waste is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Light Equipment Operator to support daily operations at its transfer station facilities. This position combines light equipment operation, customer service, site maintenance, and waste screening responsibilities in a fast-paced outdoor environment.

🛠 Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Equipment Operation

  • Safely operate light automotive, construction, and earthmoving equipment used in transfer station operations.
  • Perform pre-operational and post-operational equipment inspections.
  • Monitor equipment condition and report maintenance needs.
  • Follow all safety procedures and operational guidelines.

Transfer Station Operations

  • Assist with daily solid waste disposal and recycling activities.
  • Open and close transfer station facilities as assigned.
  • Conduct waste screening to identify prohibited or hazardous materials.
  • Perform general labor and site maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.

Customer Service & Public Interaction

  • Assist customers with recycling, disposal procedures, and fee information.
  • Direct traffic safely throughout the facility.
  • Answer questions and provide courteous, professional customer service.
  • Monitor customer activities and promote safe practices on site.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate logs, inspection reports, and operational records.
  • Comply with County policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Support departmental operations and perform additional duties as assigned.

✅ Qualifications

Required

  • Ability to safely operate light equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and remain active throughout a 10-hour shift.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to perform minor equipment maintenance.
  • Dependable attendance and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Licenses & Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass a driving history review.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive drug screening.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background check.
