Job Title: Permit Clerk
Position Summary
The Permit Clerk is responsible for providing administrative and customer service support in the processing, issuance, and recordkeeping of building, zoning, and related permits. This position serves as the first point of contact for the public, contractors, and developers, ensuring applications are complete, fees are collected, and information is accurately recorded in compliance with local codes and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, review, and process applications for building, zoning, and related permits.
- Provide information to applicants regarding requirements, fees, timelines, and permit procedures.
- Verify application accuracy and completeness; assist customers with correcting or completing forms as needed.
- Collect fees, issue receipts, and maintain accurate financial records.
- Enter data into permit tracking systems; maintain paper and digital files for permit applications and approvals.
- Respond to inquiries by phone, email, and in person regarding permit requirements, inspection scheduling, and department services.
- Coordinate permit routing to appropriate departments or officials for review and approval.
- Track the status of applications and notify applicants of permit decisions.
- Generate reports, correspondence, and official documents as required.
- Assist with scheduling inspections and updating inspection records.
- Maintain a professional and courteous working relationship with contractors, property owners, and the public.
- Perform other administrative and clerical duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework or administrative certification preferred.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of clerical, administrative, or customer service experience (municipal/government office experience a plus).
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to learn specialized permit tracking software.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interpret and explain basic building codes, zoning regulations, and permitting procedures.
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to handle inquiries tactfully and professionally.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow established policies and procedures.
Work Environment
- Office-based role with frequent interaction with the public.
- May require extended periods of sitting, data entry, and handling paper documents.
Schedule:
Monday thru Friday, 8am- 5pm
Pay:
$21.50- $24.00 per hour (based on experience)
