Position Summary
The Laser Welder is responsible for the safe and efficient setup, operation, and maintenance of laser welding equipment used in the fabrication and assembly of precision metal components. This role supports manufacturing operations by performing high-quality welds, inspecting finished products, troubleshooting welding issues, and ensuring compliance with quality, safety, and production requirements. The Laser Welder works closely with Manufacturing Engineers, Quality, and Production teams to support production goals and continuous improvement initiatives. Adapted from the responsibilities and structure of the Assembly Technician role.
Key Responsibilities
Laser Welding Operations
- Set up and operate laser welding equipment according to work instructions, engineering drawings, and specifications.
- Perform laser welding on stainless steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and other metals as required.
- Adjust laser parameters including power, speed, focus, and beam alignment to achieve quality welds.
- Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, technical drawings, and work orders.
- Verify proper fit-up, alignment, and preparation of materials prior to welding.
- Maintain accurate production records and documentation.
Inspection & Quality Control
- Perform visual and dimensional inspections of welded components.
- Verify weld quality, penetration, appearance, and structural integrity.
- Identify and document defects, non-conformances, and rework requirements.
- Utilize measuring equipment including:
- Calipers
- Micrometers
- Height gauges
- Angle finders
- Weld inspection tools
- Support corrective action and continuous improvement initiatives.
Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of laser welding equipment.
- Troubleshoot welding defects, alignment issues, and equipment malfunctions.
- Report equipment concerns to Maintenance and Engineering teams.
- Assist with process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce scrap.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all laser safety protocols and manufacturing safety procedures.
- Utilize required PPE including:
- Safety glasses
- Laser-rated protective equipment
- Gloves
- Steel-toed footwear
- Maintain compliance with:
- OSHA regulations
- Company safety policies
- Manufacturing quality standards
- Participate in safety audits and continuous improvement activities.
Production Support
- Meet daily production requirements and schedule commitments.
- Support new product introductions (NPI) and process validations.
- Cross-train across multiple welding and fabrication workstations.
- Assist Manufacturing Engineers with process optimization and workflow improvements.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2+ years of laser welding experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and weld specifications.
- Experience operating laser welding systems and related equipment.
- Knowledge of welding metallurgy and fabrication processes.
- Basic computer skills for production tracking and documentation.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.
Preferred
- AWS welding certification.
- Experience with robotic laser welding systems.
- Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication and machining operations.
- Experience working in aerospace, automotive, medical device, or precision manufacturing environments.
- Lean Manufacturing and 5S knowledge.
- Forklift certification.
