Job Summary
The Masking Technician supports the shot peening and surface treatment process by applying protective materials to precision components. This role ensures critical areas of parts are properly masked, protected, and prepared to meet strict quality and tolerance requirements before and after exposure to high-velocity shot peening operations. Attention to detail, material handling, and quality inspection are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Surface Protection
- Apply masking tape, silicone compounds, polyurethane molds, and other protective materials to shield designated areas of parts from high-velocity shot peening impact.
- Clean and prepare component surfaces to ensure proper adhesion of masking materials.
- Maintain clean, contamination-free surfaces prior to processing.
- Select the appropriate masking materials based on part requirements and processing needs.
- Apply masking materials accurately and remove them carefully after processing without damaging the part or affecting tolerances.
- Inspect masked and unmasked areas using tools, fixtures, and, in some cases, custom-molded solutions.
- Ensure protected areas meet required specifications, tolerances, and quality standards throughout the process.
- Assist with loading and positioning parts into shot peening machinery.
- Support fixture setup to ensure consistent and repeatable processing results.
Basic Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Prior experience in a manufacturing, production, or industrial environment preferred.
- Ability to perform detailed, hands-on work requiring precision and consistency.
- Ability to follow work instructions, quality standards, and safety procedures.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and comfort working with tools, fixtures, and production equipment.
