Project Electrical Engineer

Location: St. Louis, MO
Salary: $90,000+ (based on experience)

Position Summary

The Project Electrical Engineer plays a key role in designing and implementing electrical solutions for industrial machinery and plant systems. Working both independently and collaboratively within a diverse engineering team, this individual oversees project execution from concept to completion. Responsibilities include designing electromechanical components, managing engineering projects, ensuring compliance with company and industry standards, and supporting manufacturing, sales, and customer service teams.

This position requires a balance of hands-on technical work, project management, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure timely and high-quality deliverables.


Key Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute engineering projects, defining scope, activities, milestones, and resource needs.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, and engineering checklists to ensure timely and cost-effective completion.
  • Lead project meetings, provide status updates, and ensure effective communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Take ownership of project deliverables, ensuring quality and adherence to specifications.

Electrical & Control System Design

  • Interpret and develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and system layouts.
  • Design and troubleshoot industrial control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and VFDs.
  • Develop control system design documents and electrical drawings using AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
  • Select and integrate industrial instrumentation such as thermocouples, flowmeters, pressure sensors, and vibration sensors.
  • Ensure compliance with machine safety standards and industry regulations.

Engineering Development & Quality Control

  • Analyze engineering data to improve existing designs and develop innovative solutions.
  • Conduct detailed product reviews to confirm compliance with company standards and customer requirements.
  • Utilize computer-based modeling tools to test and verify designs.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, bills of materials, and ERP entries.
  • Support manufacturing by providing guidance on materials, processes, and system integration.

Vendor & Procurement Coordination

  • Work with vendors to obtain detailed quotes for electrical components and project deliverables.
  • Prepare purchase order requisitions for motors, fans, dust collection devices, and structural supports.
  • Develop specifications for engineered buyouts, ensuring alignment with project needs.

Field Service & Commissioning (Up to 25% Travel Required)

  • Oversee system testing, troubleshooting, and optimization to ensure proper functionality.
  • Develop detailed commissioning plans, documenting procedures, results, and any identified issues.
  • Diagnose and resolve system malfunctions or inefficiencies in collaboration with site teams.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Train personnel on equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Provide written reports summarizing commissioning activities.

Cross-Departmental Support & Continuous Improvement

  • Provide technical support to Sales, R&D, Production, and Customer Service teams.
  • Maintain up-to-date engineering standards and procedures, ensuring continuous process improvement.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies and industry advancements to enhance skill sets and product development.

Qualifications & Skills

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and 5+ years of related experience may be considered.

Technical Skills & Competencies

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, and engineering project management tools.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial control systems, PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens), and HMI software.
  • Understanding of network infrastructure and protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus).
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems, control panels, and automation equipment.
  • Experience with industrial instrumentation and electric motor control (soft start, VFDs).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical documentation, training, and team collaboration.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods.
  • Occasional standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, or lifting (up to 25 lbs).
  • Strong visual acuity for reviewing technical drawings and electrical schematics.
