Estimator (Industrial Automation / Custom Machinery)
Location: Spartanburg, SC
Pay: $75,000/year
Shift: 1st Shift | Monday–Friday
Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Estimator to support custom machinery and industrial automation projects. This role is responsible for developing accurate cost estimates, preparing proposals, and working closely with engineering, sales, and production teams to ensure projects are properly scoped and competitively priced.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review customer specifications, drawings, RFQs, and technical documentation
- Develop detailed cost estimates for materials, labor, fabrication, machining, automation components, and subcontracted services
- Obtain vendor and subcontractor quotes for purchased equipment and controls
- Collaborate with engineering, sales, and production teams to define project scope and pricing strategies
- Prepare formal proposals, pricing summaries, and scope documentation
- Evaluate project risks, schedules, and technical challenges during the estimating process
- Support project handoff to engineering and production teams
- Track estimate accuracy and identify cost improvement opportunities
- Maintain estimating databases and cost history records
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of experience estimating custom machinery, industrial equipment, or automation systems
- Strong knowledge of fabrication processes (welding, machining, forming, assembly)
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and electrical/control schematics
- Experience with automation components such as PLCs, HMIs, motors, drives, sensors, and instrumentation
- Ability to develop accurate labor and material cost estimates
- Experience working with bills of materials (BOMs) and cost breakdowns
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with ERP and estimating software preferred
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or related field
- Experience with OEM equipment, industrial automation, or process equipment
- Familiarity with controls integration, PLC/HMI systems, and steam/thermal systems
- Experience with textile machinery is a plus
