Operations Manager

Job Summary:
The Operations Manager oversees and coordinates all functions of the operations department to ensure optimal performance, safety, quality, and profitability. This role requires strong leadership, strategic planning, and operational oversight to drive efficiency and support business growth.


Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Staffing

  • Supervise and direct all operational staff, including dispatchers, assistants, warehouse personnel, drivers, and service crews.

  • Recruit, train, and retain qualified personnel to meet staffing needs during peak and off-peak seasons.

  • Ensure all team members and contractors are properly trained and re-trained when necessary.

  • Conduct performance reviews, facilitate career development, deliver recognition, and manage corrective actions as needed.

  • Collaborate with senior management on operational policy, planning, and goal setting in Quality, Safety, Capacity, and Profitability.

Safety & Compliance

  • Prioritize safety above all else across daily operations.

  • Establish and monitor safety goals related to driving, workplace injuries, and property damage.

  • Promote a proactive “See something, say something” safety culture.

  • Ensure full compliance with all regulatory requirements, permits, licenses, and internal policies.

  • Investigate incidents, take corrective action, and escalate issues when needed.

  • Develop and enforce security protocols for facilities and vehicles.

Service Quality

  • Maintain high-quality service standards per company and van line requirements.

  • Ensure all crew members have current criminal background check clearances (CBC/CID).

  • Monitor and improve Unigroup, Local, and Military survey scores for packing, loading, and unloading.

  • Coordinate timely daily planning and scheduling across all service lines.

  • Partner with Claims Manager to improve service delivery and reduce claim incidents.

  • Ensure availability and maintenance of all materials, equipment, and job paperwork.

Financial Performance & Efficiency

  • Monitor gross margins across service lines and implement plans for improvement.

  • Oversee preventive maintenance to reduce downtime, rentals, and repair costs.

  • Analyze job costing, route efficiency, and post-job results to maximize profitability.

  • Control labor costs, including overtime, and maintain productivity targets.

  • Prepare and manage annual Operations Department budget.

  • Support business development by participating in client meetings and contract negotiations.

Capacity & Growth

  • Recommend capital investments to enhance equipment and operational capabilities.

  • Ensure the department is properly staffed, trained, and equipped to support growth.

  • Document and counsel employees and contractors in alignment with strategic goals.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred OR 3–5 years of relevant experience in operations/warehouse management

  • 5+ years in general operations; 3+ years in household goods preferred

  • Prior supervisory or management experience required


Additional Requirements

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Ability to interpret safety rules, technical documents, and write reports

  • Strong math and reasoning skills; knowledge of basic algebra and geometry

  • CDL preferred but not required


Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct supervision of warehouse and office operations personnel. Responsibilities include hiring, training, work assignments, performance management, and conflict resolution in alignment with company policies and labor laws.


Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Moderate noise environment typical of warehouse/office settings

  • Must frequently lift/move up to 10 lbs; occasional climbing, kneeling, and crawling required

  • Requires use of hands, good vision, and the ability to sit/stand for extended periods
