Packaging Engineer Job Summary:
A manufacturing company in West Michigan is seeking a Packaging Engineer for a full-time contract role. The Packaging Engineer will support packaging development and optimization initiatives across multiple product lines. This role is responsible for evaluating existing packaging, designing and testing new packaging solutions, ensuring regulatory compliance, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve quality, efficiency, and performance. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and hands-on experience with packaging materials, testing, and validation processes.
Packaging Engineer Responsibilities:
- Evaluate current packaging designs for performance, cost, and manufacturability
- Develop, design, and test new packaging concepts that support product protection, sustainability, and operational efficiency
- Conduct packaging validation activities, including testing, documentation, and reporting
- Ensure all packaging materials and processes comply with regulatory, safety, and quality standards
- Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, engineering, and operations teams to support production needs and troubleshoot packaging issues
- Work closely with external suppliers to source materials, review specifications, and resolve technical concerns
- Maintain detailed documentation of packaging specifications, testing results, and design revisions
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to packaging performance and cost optimization
- Participate in cross-functional project meetings and provide technical guidance on packaging requirements
Schedule & Pay:
- Full-time, contract role (estimated 5-6 months), 7am-4pm
- $40–$45/hr., BOE
Packaging Engineer Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field
- 2+ years of experience in packaging engineering, packaging design, or packaging development
- Knowledge of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and packaging testing/validation
- Familiarity with industry standards and regulatory requirements
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments and communicate technical information effectively
- Proficiency with packaging design software and testing equipment
- Background working with suppliers and managing packaging specifications
