Location: East Metro

Hourly Wage: $28-$40 DOE

Role Overview:
The CAD Operator in jewelry manufacturing is responsible for creating detailed 3D models of jewelry designs, preparing files for casting or CNC, collaborating with designers and bench jewelers, and ensuring design intent is accurately translated into production-ready models.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create 3D CAD models of jewelry pieces (rings, pendants, earrings, etc.) based on conceptual sketches, 2D drawings, or design briefs.
  • Use CAD software such as Rhino, Grasshopper, Matrix, JewelCAD, or SolidWorks (depending on company) to build detailed and accurate models.
  • Prepare CAD files for downstream processes:
    • Generate STL or other formats for 3D printing / casting.
    • Provide detailed technical drawings if needed.
    • Ensure correct tolerances, wall thickness, and structure for casting or machining.
  • Work closely with the production team (casting, finishing, bench jewelers) to ensure manufacturability.
  • Revise models based on feedback from designers or production (e.g., change settings, refine prongs, adjust stones).
  • Maintain a CAD library of parts (settings, shanks, findings, etc.) for reuse in future designs.
  • Perform quality checks on CAD files (e.g., verify surface normals, check for non-manifold geometry) to prevent manufacturing issues.
  • Document version history, change logs, and maintain organized project files.
  • Estimate time required for CAD tasks and communicate timelines to project managers or designers.
  • Occasionally assist in design conceptualization or ideation (optional, depending on role).

Qualifications / Skills:

  • Experience with 3D CAD software (Rhino, Grasshopper, Matrix, JewelCAD, or comparable).
  • Strong understanding of jewelry design principles (stone settings, prongs, shanks, etc.) is highly beneficial.
  • Knowledge of casting/manufacturing constraints (minimum wall thickness, shrinkage, moldability).
  • Attention to detail and ability to work with high precision.
  • Good communication skills — ability to take design direction and provide feedback.
  • Time management / organizational skills to handle multiple pieces / projects concurrently.
  • Portfolio of past CAD work (especially jewelry) is often required.
  • Bachelor’s degree is not always necessary; many CAD operators are skilled via vocational training, self-taught, or through design schools.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing or rapid prototyping is a plus.

Working Conditions:

  • Office / studio environment; may require some coordination with manufacturing floor (casting, bench).
  • Full-time, possibly with standard business hours; occasional overtime depending on project load.
  • May involve collaboration across design, production, quality control, and sales/marketing (for custom or high-end pieces).
