Machine Shop Supervisor - DIRECT HIRE 

Express Employment is working with a local manufacturing client seeking an experienced Machine Shop Supervisor to lead daily machining operations in a precision manufacturing environment.

 

The ideal candidate has strong technical expertise in CNC and manual machining, proven leadership experience, and the ability to drive performance in a low-volume, tight-tolerance environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day machine shop operations to meet production, quality, and delivery goals
  • Set priorities, allocate resources, and manage workflow based on business needs
  • Provide technical leadership across machining operations, including CNC programming, setup, and process optimization
  • Ensure all machining activities meet specifications, tolerances, and quality requirements
  • Select appropriate tooling, materials, and machining methods for production
  • Monitor machine performance and processes to ensure efficiency and quality output
  • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture and compliance with all safety procedures
  • Track and improve production metrics, including output, scrap, and rework
  • Lead, coach, and develop machinists; hold team accountable for performance and quality
  • Adjust staffing and workload to meet production demands
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across shop floor processes
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Operations on tooling, process improvements, and job estimation
  • Support fixture design, tooling development, and prototype work
  • Assist with hands-on machining tasks as needed (setup, operation, finishing)
  • Ensure availability of tools, materials, and equipment
  • Manage timecards and support employee performance management
  • Support implementation of engineering changes (ECOs) and escalate issues as needed

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certification preferred
  • 10+ years of machining experience in a precision manufacturing environment
  • 5+ years of leadership or supervisory experience in a machine shop
  • Strong experience with CNC and manual machining operations
  • Experience with CNC programming (Mastercam preferred)
  • Experience with CNC mills, lathes, Swiss lathes, and manual equipment
  • Experience working in a low-volume, tight-tolerance environment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of machining processes, tooling, and materials
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools and inspection techniques
  • Solid understanding of machining math (geometry, trigonometry)
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to lead teams, prioritize work, and drive accountability
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Effective communication skills across teams and departments
  • Basic computer skills for reporting and documentation

Work Environment

  • Machine shop environment with CNC mills, lathes, Swiss machines, and manual equipment
  • Exposure to moving machinery, metal shavings, noise, and vibration
  • Regular exposure to oils, coolants, and machining materials
  • Required use of PPE (safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.)

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, and working near operating equipment
  • Frequent use of hands for tools, materials, and measurement equipment
  • Ability to lift and move materials as needed
  • Strong attention to safety and situational awareness
