Job Full Description
Welding Skills and Competency Profile:
LEVEL I
Able to meet or exceed weld quality standards for both MIG and TIG welding. Capable of
setting up welding equipment to include wire feed rate, gas selection, regulating current
and voltage for proper fusion of metals.
Perform ordinary and repetitive hand welding operations, proficient welding vertical,
horizontal, and overhead positions.
Operate simple tools such as grinders, die cutters, drills, and cleaning brushes.
Maintain mechanical strength on standardized assemblies and products.
Position pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, or guides.
Apply appropriate math to solve welding problem: whole numbers, fractions, decimals,
and geometry.
Take measurements to ensure components meet tolerance per engineering drawings.
Select size and type of rod or wire appropriate for metal and welding applications.
Interpret welding symbols, abbreviations, and joint designs.
Capable of performing day–to-day activities with little supervision.
Understanding of quality requirements (weld quality and component distortion) and
works to meet or exceed the baseline. Stops work if operation is below quality
standards and brings the discrepancy to supervisor’s attention.
Conduct simple maintenance and preventative maintenance on all welding equipment.
LEVEL II
Maintain mechanical strength and high pressures on diversified assemblies and
products.
Layout and mark weld points on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or
templates.
Understanding of blocking, clamping, or holding parts in relative position to avoid
distortion.
Thorough knowledge of weld requirements based on material type, thickness, and
function.
Set-up gigs, holding fixtures, or guides using measuring instruments and hand tools.
Capable of set-up and operation of auxiliary welding equipment such as track welders.
Capable of operating simple fabricating / forming equipment such as drill press, sheet
and roll press brake, plasma cutter, and metal shear.
Able to achieve high quality weld finish on a consistent bases.
Capable of performing day-to-day activities with no supervision.
Knowledge and ability to perform non-destructive weld tests.
LEVEL III
Perform difficult welding operations on a wide range of metals and alloys for complex,
precision assemblies involving high strength welds or welds to pressurized units.
Plan and layout welding sequence, referring to drawings, blueprints or specifications.
Obtain maximum weld strength, avoiding distortion and excessive weld at joints.
Capable of providing technical direction and supervision to others.
Take corrective action on identified welding problem / issue.
