Position Summary
Customer-facing technician responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and servicing computers, laptops, and related hardware at the retail counter. Combines strong technical break-fix skills with clear communication and efficient service to resolve hardware issues quickly while delivering a positive customer experience.
Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Greet customers at the service counter, intake devices, document reported issues, and gather relevant history (symptoms, recent changes, previous repairs).
- Perform hardware diagnostics on desktops, laptops, all-in-ones, and peripherals using diagnostic tools, visual inspection, and component-level testing.
- Identify and repair common hardware failures, including:
- Power issues, failed power supplies, and charging ports
- Hard drives / SSDs, RAM, and storage upgrades
- Screens, hinges, keyboards, trackpads, and chassis damage
- Motherboards, cooling systems, fans, and thermal paste application
- Ports, connectors, batteries, and basic component replacement
- Provide clear explanations of findings, recommended repairs, estimated costs, and turnaround times to customers.
- Complete repairs in a timely manner, test fully after work is completed, and verify functionality before returning devices.
- Manage parts inventory for common break-fix components, request special-order parts when needed, and maintain accurate work order documentation.
- Perform basic software-related support tied to hardware issues (OS reinstalls, driver updates, data backup/recovery guidance) as needed.
- Maintain a clean, organized workbench and counter area; follow ESD and safety procedures.
- Escalate complex or out-of-scope repairs to higher-level technicians or the service manager.
- Counter sales support (accessories, cables, basic upgrades)
- Uphold store policies on data privacy, customer property handling, and service warranties.
Typical Skills & Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with PC/laptop hardware diagnostics and component-level repair
- Strong customer service and communication skills (ability to explain technical issues in plain language)
- Familiarity with Windows and basic macOS hardware troubleshooting
- Ability to manage multiple repair tickets and prioritize based on urgency and promised turnaround
- Basic inventory and documentation habits
- Preferred: CompTIA A+ or equivalent experience; experience in a retail or service-center environment
