Position Summary
The Machine Maintenance Technician is responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining production equipment and machinery used in steel manufacturing operations. This position ensures equipment reliability, minimizes production downtime, and supports safe and efficient plant operations. The technician performs preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities on mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and automated systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform routine preventive and predictive maintenance on steel processing and production equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic failures and implement corrective actions.
- Inspect machinery and equipment to identify potential problems and recommend repairs.
- Repair, replace, and adjust machine components, including motors, bearings, gearboxes, conveyors, pumps, valves, rollers, and drive systems.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and equipment drawings.
- Troubleshoot automated systems, sensors, PLC-controlled equipment, and industrial controls.
- Install, align, calibrate, and test new equipment and machinery.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and equipment history documentation.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, company policies, and environmental standards.
- Collaborate with production personnel to minimize downtime and improve equipment performance.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reliability and efficiency.
- Respond to emergency equipment breakdowns during scheduled shifts or on-call assignments.
- Maintain housekeeping standards in workshops, maintenance areas, and production facilities.
Required Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Technical certification or associate degree in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Technology, Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, or a related field preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 2-5 years of industrial maintenance experience preferred.
- Experience in steel manufacturing, metal processing, heavy industrial, or manufacturing environments is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
- Knowledge of industrial safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair complex manufacturing equipment.
- Familiarity with welding, fabrication, machining, and rigging practices.
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and engineering drawings.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments, and diagnostic equipment.
- Working knowledge of PLCs, variable frequency drives (VFDs), sensors, and automation systems preferred.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
- Frequently lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work at heights and in varying environmental conditions.
- Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
Working Conditions
- Industrial steel manufacturing environment with exposure to heat, noise, dust, vibration, and moving machinery.
- May require shift work, overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs.
- Strict adherence to safety and environmental regulations is required.
