CNC Lathe Machine Operator – Immediate Opening

Location: Watkins Glen, NY
Employment Type: Full-Time Temp-to-Hire

Position Overview

Express Employment Professionals is seeking a detail-oriented CNC Lathe Machine Operator to join a leading manufacturer in the region. This skilled technician will operate computer-controlled lathe machines to produce high-precision cylindrical parts from metal, plastic, or composites. This role is critical for companies serving aerospace, automotive, defense, and precision manufacturing industries.


Key Responsibilities

  • Set up CNC lathe machines by installing tools, fixtures, and raw materials

  • Load and manage CNC programs (G-code or CAM software)

  • Set work coordinates and tool offsets accurately

  • Monitor machining processes, adjusting feed rates and speeds as needed

  • Maintain proper coolant flow and ensure efficient chip removal

  • Inspect finished parts using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and other precision tools

  • Document inspection results and report any deviations

  • Perform routine maintenance including cleaning, lubrication, and tool replacement

  • Troubleshoot machine issues and collaborate with engineers/programmers to optimize operations


Tools and Equipment

  • CNC lathes (Haas, Mazak, Okuma, Fanuc controls)

  • Carbide inserts, boring bars, drills, and cutting tools

  • Precision measuring instruments (micrometers, dial indicators, calipers)

  • Coolant systems and chip conveyors


Required Skills

  • Proficiency with G-code and CNC controls

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings

  • Understanding of tolerances, surface finishes, and GD&T principles

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail

  • Basic math and trigonometry skills

  • Manual dexterity and excellent hand-eye coordination


Preferred Certifications (not required but a plus)

  • NIMS Machining Level I

  • OSHA 10-hour Safety Certification

  • CNC programming or CAM software training (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360)
