Lead Machinist / Shop Floor Supervisor
Position Overview:
We are seeking a hands-on and experienced Lead Machinist / Shop Floor Supervisor to oversee daily production activities, lead a team of skilled machinists, and ensure quality, safety, and efficiency in our machining operations. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and a proactive approach to continuous improvement and team development.
Key Responsibilities
1. Production Coordination

Assign and prioritize work orders based on current production schedules.

Monitor progress, adjust workloads, and reallocate resources to meet deadlines.

Collaborate closely with programming, planning, and quality control teams.
2. Team Leadership
-
Lead, mentor, and train machinists, apprentices, and setup technicians.

Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and skill development.

Support performance reviews and help resolve interpersonal or workflow challenges.
3. Technical Support
-
Provide hands-on assistance with machine setups, tooling changes, and diagnostics.

Interpret blueprints, GD&T, and detailed work instructions to ensure accurate execution.

Recommend tooling, fixtures, and machining strategies to improve performance.
4. Quality & Process Oversight

Ensure all parts meet specifications and tight tolerances.

Conduct in-process inspections and enforce first-article inspection standards.

Promote and assist with continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, and 5S initiatives.
5. Safety & Compliance
-
Enforce all safety policies and ensure proper PPE usage.

Lead safety meetings and toolbox talks.

Ensure machine safety, cleanliness, and maintenance are up to standard.
6. Communication & Reporting
-
Provide regular updates to production managers and supervisors.

Track and report key performance indicators (KPIs) including downtime, scrap rates, and throughput.

Manage time tracking, material usage, and documentation within ERP/MES systems.
Qualifications & Skills
-
Strong machining background (CNC mills, lathes, surface grinders, etc.)
-
Proficient in blueprint reading, GD&T, and precision measurement tools
-
Experienced in leading and developing teams in a production environment

Working knowledge of G-code, feeds/speeds, and advanced machining strategies

Strong communication and organizational skills

Ability to troubleshoot machines and processes effectively
Preferred Certifications & Training
-
NIMS Machining Level I or II Certification
-
OSHA 10/30-Hour General Industry Certification
-
Lean Manufacturing, 6S, or Kaizen training
-
CNC Programming or CAD/CAM experience (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360)
