Automation Technology Specialist / Controls Engineer

 

Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Automation Technology Specialist / Controls Engineer to support, maintain, and enhance automated industrial machinery and control systems. This role involves hands-on troubleshooting, programming, commissioning, and upgrading of PLC, HMI, VFD, and SCADA systems across multiple facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, read, and modify electrical, fluid power, and P&ID schematics to IEC/NFPA standards.

  • Program and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and SCADA systems (Siemens, Allen Bradley, and others).

  • Develop and maintain control logic in multiple programming languages (Ladder Logic, SCL, Structured Text, C++, Python, SQL, etc.).

  • Upgrade and retrofit obsolete control systems.

  • Install, commission, and repair industrial communications systems and machinery.

  • Use advanced test equipment (oscilloscopes, calibrators, vibration analyzers, thermal imagers, etc.).

  • Train technicians/apprentices in controls, troubleshooting, programming, and fluid power systems.

  • Ensure all work complies with safety standards and PPE requirements.

  • Support production teams across multiple sites; travel as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

  • 10+ years of direct industrial automation experience.

  • PLC/HMI programming certification preferred (Siemens, Allen Bradley).

  • State-issued electrical license preferred.

  • Proficient in AutoCAD Electrical (preferred).

  • Strong knowledge of NFPA 70 and industrial safety practices.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Expert troubleshooting skills for electrical, mechanical, and fluid power systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex schematics, blueprints, and code.

  • Strong organizational skills for documentation and project tracking.

  • Excellent communication and training abilities.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Comfortable working at heights up to 60 ft and in various environmental conditions (heat, cold, noise, chemicals).

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to moving machinery, electrical hazards, airborne particles, and extreme temperatures.

  • High-noise industrial setting.
