Job Title: Director of Risk Management, Worker’s Compensation and Safety

Location: Honolulu, HI

Salary: $120k

Key Responsibilities

Risk Management & Insurance

  • Lead the enterprise risk management strategy across all business entities, managing insurance programs, renewals, exposure data, and loss runs.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with insurance brokers, carriers, TPAs, and legal counsel, ensuring optimal coverage and cost control.
  • Analyze risk trends, claims performance, and cost-of-risk data; prepare reports and recommendations for senior leadership.
  • Support business continuity, incident response, crisis management planning, and risk‑related regulatory compliance.

Workers’ Compensation Administration

  • Oversee the full lifecycle of workers’ compensation claims in accordance with Hawaii WC laws, including investigations, documentation, RTW programs, and claim resolutions.
  • Partner with TPAs, medical providers, defense counsel, and internal stakeholders to manage claims, mitigate risks, and reduce costs.
  • Train managers on injury reporting, safety documentation, and employee communication; prepare materials for hearings, mediations, and appeals.

Safety & Loss Prevention

  • Lead safety programs across multi‑site retail and grocery operations, ensuring compliance with HIOSH, OSHA, and industry best practices.
  • Conduct safety audits, incident investigations, hazard assessments, and implement corrective action plans.
  • Manage safety training, track KPIs, and partner with Operations to reduce ergonomic risks, prevent injuries, and improve workplace safety.

Vendor & TPA Oversight

  • Select and manage TPAs and safety/risk vendors, establishing service standards, KPIs, and audit expectations to ensure performance.
  • Oversee relationships with medical networks, UR vendors, nurse case management, IME providers, and defense counsel.

Leadership & Cross‑Functional Partnership

  • Advise senior leaders on risk exposure, claims trends, safety issues, and mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with HR, Legal, Operations, and Finance on claims management, policy development, labor relations matters, and cost reduction initiatives.
  • Lead department goals, metrics, budgets, and mentor staff in risk, safety, and WC administration.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Safety, Human Resources, Business, or related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in workers’ compensation, risk management, and workplace safety.
  • Experience supporting large, multi-site retail or grocery operations, including strong knowledge of Hawaii WC laws and HIOSH requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certifications such as ARM, CPCU, CSP, or ASP.
  • Experience working with unionized workforces and multiple legal entities.
  • Background in grocery, retail, distribution, or hospitality environments.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Regular travel to stores and facilities across Hawaii to conduct onsite inspections and investigations.
  • Hybrid work structure combining office, field, and store environments.
