Finance Director
Location: Asheville Area (Onsite)
Salary: $70,000 – $85,000 per year (DOE)
A well-established nonprofit organization in the Asheville area is seeking a Finance Director to oversee financial operations and provide strategic guidance on budgeting, reporting, and compliance. This role ensures the organization’s financial health while supporting leadership with planning, grant compliance, and long-term financial sustainability.
The ideal candidate will have strong nonprofit accounting experience, knowledge of grant management, and the ability to work collaboratively with leadership, staff, and external partners.
Responsibilities
Financial Management & Strategy

Oversee all financial operations including budgeting, reporting, and financial planning

Develop and manage the organization’s annual operating budget in collaboration with senior leadership and the Board of Directors

Provide financial guidance and recommendations to leadership regarding financial strategy and sustainability
Accounting & Reporting

Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes

Monitor daily expense tracking and maintain accurate financial records

Reconcile accounts monthly and maintain the general ledger

Prepare monthly and year-end financial reports for leadership and the Board
Grant & Compliance Management

Administer federal, state, and municipal grant funding, including documentation, eligibility verification, and reporting requirements

Monitor grant expenditures to ensure compliance with funding guidelines

Serve as the primary point of contact during grant audits and financial reviews
Vendor & Financial Administration

Prepare annual tax forms for vendors

Oversee landlord and property-related payments in coordination with internal staff

Support improvements to financial processes, reporting systems, and internal controls
Audit & Organizational Support

Prepare materials for the annual financial audit and serve as the primary contact during audit field work

Assist with preparation of IRS Form 990 and other required financial filings

Provide financial reports and updates to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors

Supervise finance department staff
Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field

Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

CPA highly preferred
-
Experience working in nonprofit finance and managing grants preferred

Proficiency with accounting software such as QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel

Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills

Ability to work collaboratively with leadership, board members, and community partners
