  • Express Gives $20,000 to Outstanding Teachers

    CareerTech educators presented cash awards for excellence by Express Employment Professionals

    Outstanding Oklahoma CareerTech personnel from across the state today received cash awards totaling $20,000 from Express Employment Professionals.

    The top statewide recognition, a $10,000 award for Teacher of the Year, went to Mary Foxworth, a literacy and academic instructor at Tulsa Technology Center. The award recognizes excellence and dedication in CareerTech and is given by the Oklahoma Association for Career and Technology Education, the professional organization for the state's CareerTech administrators, teachers and staff members. This is the third year Express has sponsored prize money associated with these awards.

Outstanding teachers like Mary Foxworth teach valuable skills that employers and workers must have to succeed together.  If Oklahoma is going thrive and put more of our citizens to work, we have to encourage and expand CareerTech education," said Bob Funk, CEO and chairman of the board for Express Employment Professionals.

    "Sponsoring these awards is our way of demonstrating to CareerTech educators that their work truly matters to the future of our state," said Funk.

    Express sponsored four awards at the 49th annual Oklahoma CareerTech Summer Conference hosted by OkACTE and the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education. Award recipients are members of OkACTE and go on to compete regionally and nationally.

    "Express is an outstanding Oklahoma company that has truly embraced the value of career and technology education. They know firsthand how many high-quality job opportunities are made available through CareerTech. So I couldn't be more pleased to have them team up with OkACTE to show support and enthusiasm for Oklahoma teachers," said OkACTE Executive Director Skye McNiel.

    Oklahoma CareerTech State Director Marcie Mack said, "We have one of the finest CareerTech systems in the country, and that is a direct result of the outstanding teachers who work hard to cultivate high-quality classroom experiences for their students. We are so thankful to Bob Funk and Express for their generous support of our CareerTech personnel."

    Mary Foxworth was selected as the OkACTE Teacher of the Year for making significant contributions toward innovative programs that are improving and promoting career and technology education.  Foxworth has been an educator for 42 years and has a variety of expertise and degrees ranging from speech, counseling, special education, literacy and career readiness.  Currently, she is the Tulsa Technology Center District Teacher of the Year.

    Foxworth was nominated for the award by her co-workers and her students and was lauded for her dedication to go above and beyond to ensure her students succeed. 

    Foxworth is part of the Academic Center staff at Tulsa Technology Center's Lemley Campus.  She was nominated by her colleagues for her exemplary work in helping student achieve outstanding results in certification programs that give them the foundational and soft skills needed to succeed in the workplace. 

    Additionally, Foxworth was selected for her excellent instruction and tutoring in literacy, and her aptitude to work with a diverse population of students.   Colleagues and students also praised Foxworth for the level of trust, respect and admiration students have for her.  

    In response to receiving the award, Foxworth said, "Honestly I thought it was a dream.  There are so many that deserve this.  I'm so proud and honored.   I think it's awesome that Express does this.  Educators in CareerTech don't get enough recognition.  And I love Express's training materials on employment.  They come and help me with mock interview training with students, so it's so fitting that such a great company is rewarding CareerTech teachers." 

    Additional awards given by Express were a $5,000 award to the Postsecondary Teacher of the Year, Dustin Hicks, who is a practical nursing instructor and simulation specialist at Meridian Technology Center; a $2,500 award to the Outstanding New Teacher of the Year, Natalie Jordan, a marketing education instructor at Francis Tuttle Technology Center; and a $2,500 award to the OkACTE Support Staff Member of the Year, Laura Manahan, an administrative assistant and data analyst at Francis Tuttle Technology Center.

    Approximately 3,700 CareerTech educators from across the state will participate in the conference Aug.1-2 at the Oklahoma City Cox Convention Center. It is one of the largest educator professional development conferences in Oklahoma.

    OkACTE is the professional association for the state's CareerTech administrators, teachers and staff members.
