Position Summary
The Steel Purchasing Buyer is responsible for managing the purchasing and procurement of steel and related materials needed to support production operations. This position researches suppliers, obtains competitive pricing, negotiates purchasing terms, and ensures materials are available when needed. The role also requires strong vendor relationships and close coordination with internal teams to support efficient, cost-effective purchasing decisions.
The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, integrity, strong communication skills, and sound judgment when working with suppliers, customers, coworkers, supervisors, and other business partners. The wage range is $28-$30 an hour!
Responsibilities
- Manage the purchasing of steel and related materials while ensuring cost-effective and timely delivery.
- Develop purchasing strategies that support overall company and production goals.
- Research and evaluate suppliers based on pricing, quality, reliability, and service.
- Negotiate pricing, contracts, delivery schedules, and other purchasing terms.
- Work closely with the production team to anticipate material requirements and maintain adequate inventory levels.
- Identify opportunities to improve purchasing processes and reduce production delays.
- Establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with vendors.
- Manage material requirements, planning, and purchase order processes.
- Maintain accurate inventory and purchasing records.
- Monitor material usage and forecast future requirements based on project schedules.
- Update purchasing plans as project timelines, production schedules, or material needs change.
- Monitor vendor performance and address delivery, quality, pricing, or service concerns.
- Verify that suppliers meet agreed-upon terms and delivery expectations.
- Collaborate with Design, Accounting, Quality Control, Shipping, and Receiving teams to support efficient operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Previous experience in purchasing, procurement, supply chain, or a related field; steel or manufacturing experience is preferred.
- Experience working with ERP systems and strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Demonstrated ability to negotiate pricing and purchasing agreements.
- Experience developing and maintaining successful supplier relationships.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
Working Conditions
- Primarily office-based during standard business hours, with occasional visits to the fabrication or production shop.
- Shop visits may involve exposure to varying noise levels and workplace hazards.
- Additional hours may occasionally be required to meet project or production deadlines.
- Requires extended computer use in an office workstation environment.
- Regular interaction with team members, vendors, and clients.
- Must be comfortable adapting to changing priorities and deadlines associated with active construction and production projects.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to remain seated for extended periods while completing purchasing, estimating, and documentation tasks.
- Ability to occasionally lift or move materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to walk through production and construction areas, including uneven surfaces.
- Ability to read and interpret detailed construction plans, specifications, and blueprints.
