Machinist I

Department: Machine Shop
Reports To: Machine Shop Supervisor

Position Summary

The Machinist I is responsible for fabricating metal parts by operating mechanical and machining equipment. This role involves interpreting blueprints, maintaining quality and productivity standards, and supporting overall shop operations in a safe and efficient manner.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties and responsibilities of a Machine Shop Helper

  • Read and interpret blueprints and design sketches to meet specified dimensions and tolerances, with assistance from other machinists or the supervisor as needed

  • Cut and fabricate parts to print using measuring tools, saws, mills, and other machining equipment

  • Properly use and maintain required safety equipment

  • Assist other team members within the department as needed

  • Follow assigned work orders to determine required parts and priorities

  • Maintain a minimum productivity rate of 100% after the training period

  • Ensure clocked time in Visual (Work Orders and/or Detailed Indirect Entry) reflects at least 80% of paid work hours

  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and safe

  • Perform all work in accordance with company quality policies

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Skills

  • Ability to read a tape measure

  • Proficient with precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauge blocks, etc.)

  • Ability to operate Bridgeport mills and saws, including setup, with assistance as needed

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and manuals

  • Ability to follow simple instructions

  • Ability to read English

  • Proficient with general hand tools

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team


Computer Skills

  • Training will be provided on company software systems

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to stand for extended periods (6–8 hours)

  • Frequent walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and balancing

  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for precision tasks

  • Regular lifting of 25+ pounds; occasional lifting of 50+ pounds

  • Continuous exposure to moving mechanical parts

  • Moderate noise levels

  • Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
